South Gate police shoot, kill man; Sheriff’s Department investigating

A man was shot and killed by police responding to a domestic dispute in South Gate late Saturday, according to authorities.

The shooting occurred in the 9200 block of San Luis Avenue shortly after 10 p.m., according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the incident.

South Gate police responded to a 911 call that a man and woman were fighting, according to the sheriff’s statement. Officers said when they arrived at the scene, the man was uncooperative and ran away.

The man was “continually grasping at his waistband area” while running, according to the sheriff’s statement. When he turned back around to face the officers, police shot him, fearing he had a gun.

A spokeswoman for the Sheriff’s Department said a weapon was recovered from the man, but she didn’t say what kind of weapon it was.

The man, whose name has not been released, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Saturday’s incident is the 288th officer-involved shooting in Los Angeles County since 2007, according to the Times’ Homicide Report, an interactive database of all homicides in Los Angeles County.
