He was the only person in the vehicle who was shot, police said.
The 33-year-old served as a youth minister at New Beginning Community Ministries Church in Baldwin Park, according to church officials.
The Pomona Police Department urged anyone with information on the shooting to call detectives at (909) 620-2085 or to contact “Crime Stoppers” at (800) 222-8477.
This was the latest in a string of deadly shootings that have hit the city.
On Sunday, more than 200 people gathered in the football stands of Ganesha High School to pray for an end to violence in the city.
“The city of Pomona needs not only a religious revival but a revival of their minds — people have to know, this is not the scum of the Earth. This is a place that can be built up,” community leader Jason Scott told CBS Los Angeles.
